Mother, Evangelist, Prayer Warrior Claudia T. Ingram
Little Known Black History Figure
Born in the South, my transition from South Carolina to Chicago at the age of 18 marked the beginning of an over 55-year journey in the Windy City, grounded in faith and resilience.
As a widow, mother of four, and grandmother to eight, my role extends beyond family—to being a cherished Sunday School teacher for 40 years. My life, a testament to the unseen chapters of Black history, is rich with stories of strength, guided by the Lord's hand. It's a beacon of Christian love and wisdom, offering comfort and grace like sweet tea on a hot day—strong, comforting, and full of grace.
"I remember being upset about not being able to stay out late like all the other kids, and Mom said, 'Those are not my children, and I wouldn't let my dog run out in these streets at night, so what makes you think I would let you?'"
R. Ingram, eldest child
"That's the same line she gave me although it was slightly modified. 'White folk don't let their prize puddle run the streets, so what makes you think I would let you?' I couldn't roll my eyes hard enough. But guess what. I feel the same way about my children. I give them similar lines every chance I get.'"
R. Ingram, 2nd child
My memorable moments with Mother Ingram is her and others helped me learn how to drive and she was generous enough to take me to the DMV which allowed me to obtained my driver's license due to her letting me use her car. I tell you God worked it out, because he gives the saints a heart to be a help to each other and that's what he did with Mother Ingram on my behalf. I also was encouraged by her and the women of my church family far as my marriage.
I told her she have a gift of healing, because after I talk with her, it heals my spirit. I can talk to her just about anything; she understands me. I love how she welcomes me into her home from the cups of tea, plates of food, sharing of wisdom, vitamins for my body, a warm blanket when I'm cold and much more, but most of all her love.
She truly has a special place in my heart and she have gained my trust. I lean on her to pray because that's her calling and gift and she exercise it well for the Lord. I can truly testify that she is a seasoned woman of God that walks in wisdom.
I love you Mother Ingram. Evangelist Ebony Vaughn
I took a boat tour with my spiritual grandmother and it was the best experience. She’s helped me grow as a woman and a member of Christ bride and I’m so happy to have her in my life❤️💐 K. Vaughn
I met a young lady who had just move into a new apartment. She had a young daughter but no money for food or personal items. I mention it to my church family. Before I knew it, Mother asked where's she at and this is what we going to do. Mother cook a pot of beans, and I brought the things she needed. The young lady filled with gratitude. That's Mother Ingram, Always ready to help someone. M. Dixon
"Mother Ingram is the best person I know, my only living grandparent and the best role model to me and my siblings.
Growing up she’s always taught us right from wrong, how to properly clean, table manners, spreading love/positivity, and how to pray!" A. Ingram
"Mother Ingram is my friend, my spiritual guide, my prayer warrior. I pray with her and the team of warriors daily. She is the answer that I needed to help my day along. She is that ram in the bush, a heartfelt person that God has provided for those that thirst for the word. I could go on and on about her. I've known her for 18 years; she has blessed my life, helped me through the storms of life. I thank God for her and all the women and men who have been on this prayer line. Yes, we all have grown through the word of the Lord. I look up, I lift up, and I never give up. This is my motto: God is the answer, and all prayer works." J. Mitchell
This was mainly a heartfelt conversation. I was telling Mom about some of my friends and co-workers expressing to me how much they disliked their mother-in-laws. They talked about how intrusive they were in their marriages and how they were treated badly by them. I told them that my Mother-in-Love was the complete opposite. In that moment I was reminded how blessed I am. She’s loving, caring, concerned, always there to help, assists in all things. She has always been an integral part in raising our family. I love and appreciate her and her discerning spirit. Her prayers and encouraging words are always right on time. Her advice given was always in love. I’m so thankful and grateful to have my Mother-in-Love in my life. More importantly I’ve had the chance to express my love for her on a consistent basis. I want to always give her her flowers 💐 while she’s here,
Love you Always Mom
M. Ingram, Daughter in Love
Thank you for this wonderful opportunity to speak about my dear friend and Sister in Christ, Woman of God, Minister Mother Ingram, whom I first met when I was in grammar school at Clara Barton on the south side of Chicago, IL. I remember myself and other kids used to call her the lunchroom cookie lady back then because she always wore a smile on her face, kept us in line, and sometimes, some of us would be lucky enough to get an extra butter cookie from her. 😁 She was very nice to all the kids. As I became an adult, I saw Mother Ingram again for the first time since grammar school. She was working on the mayor's election voter registration committee at Clara Barton. I thought to myself, "Wow, there she is after all these years. I'm a grown adult and get to see the lady I used to see in the lunchroom giving us some cookies." I wasn’t sure if she remembered me, but I surely remembered her. I had very painful knees and was using crutches during this time, maybe 7 years ago. I wanted to vote badly but I knew I couldn’t do the long line standing. What did she do? After greeting me with a warm smile, I told her I remembered her from grammar school and it took off from there!! Well, she offered me a chair at the voting poll and said I could still get my vote in, just sit down and vote. I was delighted. She also sat with me and made sure I was cared for when my sister came to pick me up to take me home. Every year, I would call her and say, "Will you be at the voting poll? I’m going to need some help again. I’m not able to walk up all those stairs to come inside to vote." She said, "No problem, we got you!" At this time, because of Covid, curbside voting was allowed in the comfort of your car. She and a couple of other women brought out the necessary voting forms to me, stood by but did not watch me make my selection, and allowed me to vote in the car. They then took the form that was in a secured private tall folder back inside. Mother Ingram has uplifted and encouraged me and prayed for me since then for many, many years to this day. We manage to keep in touch with each other. She is truly a blessed Woman of God, ministering to so many people in need. Her words and actions align with the word of God. She will pray for you at the drop of a dime. She is warm, very friendly, easy to talk to, and tries to help you in any way she can. I’m so proud of her. I needed models for my fashion show and yes, she stepped right on in, not once but twice; she was in my fashion shows. She is truly a friend, reliable, caring, thoughtful, and Christ-like. I’ve never ever heard her insult me, talk down to me, or ridicule me. She knows that we are only human and we all fall short of the glory of God, but she never makes me feel bad. She does the opposite. She tells me to stop that bickering, hold my head up high, and trust and believe in the word of God. Whenever I feel like I’m going left, she pulls my coat tail and steers me to the right. I can call her any day, any time without feeling like I’m bothering her. She loves everybody and definitely is a praying woman. I’m so glad I know her. I could write a book about her and it would be a Best Seller. She always tells me to trust God's process; you can’t go wrong there. She is a trustworthy friend and I’m so glad I know her and am one of her friends. I will always cherish our Christian relationship. I love you, Mother Ingram!!! Keep on doing what you are doing. “Eyes have not seen, ears have not heard!” Hallelujah!!!!! Congratulations!!! Your friend and sister in Christ, Betty Carter.
